In short
A perfect day in La Paz combines sunrise at Balandra beach, a seafood lunch near the Malecón, a boat tour of Espiritu Santo Island or a swim with sea lions at Los Islotes, and sunset by the sea. The key is starting early: Balandra opens with capacity limits and morning light is the best of the day.
La Paz is one of those cities best enjoyed with the clock on your side. The sea, the food and the waterfront are minutes apart, but the order you visit them changes the whole day: early risers get Balandra almost to themselves, while late starters run into midday sun and lines. This hour-by-hour itinerary brings together what we recommend to travelers who ask how to make the most of a single day in La Paz.
| Time | Activity | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00 - 10:30 | Sunrise and calm water at Balandra | Balandra Beach (25 min from downtown) |
| 11:00 - 12:30 | Seafood lunch | La Paz Malecón (waterfront) |
| 13:00 - 17:30 | Boat tour: Espiritu Santo Island or sea lions | Departure point per tour |
| 18:00 - 19:15 | Sunset by the sea | La Paz Malecón |
| 19:30 onwards | Relaxed dinner | Historic downtown or Malecón |
Balandra is La Paz's most famous beach and the one that best rewards early birds. Between 7 and 10 in the morning the water lies flat like a mirror, low tide uncovers vast white pools and El Hongo —the mushroom-shaped rock that has become its symbol— catches the first light. Access is capacity-controlled, so arriving early is the difference between a nearly private beach and waiting your turn in the sun.
Mid-morning is for recharging, and La Paz does it well: this is a fishing town. Restaurants near the Malecón serve the catch of the day; smoked marlin tostadas, Baja-style fish tacos and clam ceviche are the classics that never fail.
Local tip: eat light if you are getting in the water afterward. A heavy lunch and a snorkel do not mix.
The second half of the day belongs to what makes La Paz unique: its sea. Of the two main options, the most complete is the full-day Espiritu Santo Island tour: you cross the channel, snorkel over reefs and, if the environmental authority allows it on your date, swim with the sea lion colony at Los Islotes. In active seasons, the Los Islotes stop is usually the moment travelers remember most.
If you prefer something shorter or are on a tight schedule, a boat trip to Balandra or a private tour paced to your group are excellent alternatives. In high season and on holiday weekends, book a day or two ahead: boats with authorized guides fill up fast.
The perfect ending is free and open to everyone: the Malecón waterfront. Walk the stretch between the Cultural Corridor and the Caracol sculpture, watch the sun sink over the Sea of Cortez and stay a little longer: after dark the sculptures light up and the city slows down. It is the moment when La Paz explains why it is called the "last frontier" of the Sea of Cortez.
At Diamante Tours we run Espiritu Santo Island tours, boat trips to Balandra, sea lion swims and private departures that fit right into this itinerary's afternoon window. Message us on WhatsApp with your date and group size and we will help you build the full day: we confirm availability, departure time and the current rate.
A perfect day in La Paz is not about filling every hour, but about placing each activity at the right hour: beach at sunrise, seafood at midday, the sea in the afternoon and the Malecón at dusk. Follow that order and the day almost plans itself.
